ABOUT SOUTH BRAZOS COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT
The South Brazos County Fire Department (SBCFD) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides service to approximately 110 square miles with 4 class A pumpers, 1 Pumper/Tanker, 4 brush trucks, 1 tanker, 1 SCBA/cascade unit, 3 command/ traffic units and 1 UTV from four stations strategically located throughout the Brazos County ESD 1 service area.
Fire department personnel are responsible for responding to medical calls, vehicle accidents, and fire calls as well as other types of emergency and non emergency situations in Brazos County south of College Station from the Brazos River to Carter Creek and the Navasota River. The fire department meets on Tuesday nights at 6:00pm for business and training: first and third Tuesdays are dedicated to apparatus/station maintenance and second and fourth Tuesdays are focused on training. Training on the second Tuesday of the month is located at SBCFD Station 1, 14841 S Dowling Road in Wellborn, and fourth Tuesday trainings are at SBCFD Station 2, located at 2985 Wingfall St. in Millican. SBCFD Station 3 is located at 1550 Arrington Road, and Station 4 is located at 20665 State Highway 6 South.
No training is required to join South Brazos County Fire Department, and an application can be downloaded here.
Per department bylaws, individuals wishing to volunteer with South Brazos County Fire Department are required to live within SBCFD's service area, or within three (3) miles of a SBCFD fire station.
Brazos County Emergency Service District 1 (the “District”) is one of four ESDs in Brazos County, organized and established by the Commissioners Court of Brazos County to provide fire and emergency medical care within the district’s service area. The estimated population in Brazos County ESD #1's 110-square mile service area is about 20,000, with a population density of around 182 people per square mile. The District contracts with the South Brazos County Fire Department (SBCFD) for fire and emergency medical care within the district's service area, and collects ad valorem taxes and sales tax for the delivery of those services.
The fire department is mostly funded through Brazos County ESD#1, while this goes a long way to funding our larger projects, such as fire trucks and large equipment, donations are still needed for certain uses. Some of these uses include office supplies, computers and upkeep, rehab (water and Gatorade), equipment upkeep, fuel and even some of our protective gear.
